Introduction

Citrus is an important fruit crop. Lemon is one of the important category of citrus. It is mainly known for its pulp and juice throughout the world. Different citrus fruits are used throughout the world as food or juice. In central India, Nagpur Sentra is grown on a large scale. Citrus fruits in India are cultivated under varied agro-ecological conditions right from arid and semiarid areas of southwest region to humid tropical climate of northeast India. In India Citrus cultivation is done on an area of about 923 thousand hectare with annual production of 8608 thousand metric tons. In Punjab citrus is grown on 39.20 hectares of land. Lemons continue to ride the citrus pandemic demand wave that is keeping strength in the wholesale market. Prices are rising slightly, and retail demand is delivering more than 20 percent sales gains year-over-year through June. World lemon demand is on the rise due to many factors including its perceived health benefits. Lemons are rich in vitamins A, B, C and E, calcium, iron, potassium and zinc to name but a few and with this it provides many therapeutic and pharmaceutical solutions to today’s everyday medical conditions. It’s also high in antioxidants due to its composition of flavonoids. Citrus cultivation in India is plagued with various problems due to limiting growing conditions, limiting water resources and high incidence of pests and diseases warranting great care from planting till the plants come to bearing in order to sustain a productive life of a minimum of 15-20 years. There is growing interest and awareness among the citrus growers for adoption of latest technologies for commercial cultivation of citrus.

Market potential & Strategy

The fresh lemon market depends on the processing industry, where low prices for derivatives equal less demand for fresh lemons, thus causing a glut. The organic lemon is bold and pure which is taken from lemons. Lemon is also used in foods processing that helps to increase the shelf life and that helps to improve the availability of the seasonal fresh product. Citric acid are organic acid that is found in lemons and helps in reducing extent in urine. Growing consciousness about health among people and increasing demand of citrus flavours among people in various industries is the major factor driving the growth of this market. Furthermore, increasing research and development activities in food and beverage industry and rising advancement in technology is set to further enhance the overall market demand for Lemon Market for the period 2021-2026. Citrus are popular for their nutritional health and personal care benefits, such as weight management, immunity boost, skincare, and hair care, besides being flavourful and aromatic.
