The jamun is an important indigenous minor fruit of commercial value. It is also known as black plum, Indian black cherry, Ram jamun etc. in different parts of India. The tree is tall and handsome, evergreen, generally grown for shade and windbreak on roads and avenues. The original home of jamun is India or the East Indies. It is also found in Thailand, Philippines, Madagascar and some other countries. The jamun has successfully been introduced into many other subtropical regions including Florida, California, Algeria, Israel, etc. In India, the maximum number of jamun trees are found scattered throughout the tropical and subtropical regions. It also occurs in the lower range of the Himalayas up to an elevation of 1,300 meters and in the Kumaon hills up to 1,600 meters. Jamun can be grown successfully in places with tropical climate. In India, it can be planted anywhere except in cold regions. There is no special effect of winter, heat and rain on its tree. But frost in winter and excessive hot sun in summer can prove to be harmful for it.

In India, It is widely grown in the larger parts of India from the Indo-Gangetic plains in the North to Tamil Nadu in the South. Jamun cultivation is economical in areas with low soil fertility and Cow water availability. Farmer can bag up to 2 lakh rupees by cultivating Jamun in one acre of land. Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Assam are the major jamun growing states in India. With good agronomical practices around 6-8 tonnes of yield can be obtained from one acre of land. Jamun is known as the indigenous crop of India. Its fruits are used for eating and seeds are used to prepare various drugs. Drugs prepared from Jamun plant is used to cure diabetes and increased blood sugar level. Jamun Fruits are highly beneficial for your body and health it is good especially diabetic patients. Now day people are keen about the fruit that are really healthy, they are searching for nutritious fruits, this interest has gained the good market for Jamun cultivation. The harvesting period is Jamun tree is a very short period. Due to its nutritional value and a short period of availability, the demand for Jamun surpasses its supply. Considering the huge market demand, cultivation of Jamun can be a very good business.
